Meduvada Recipe

A brief history of meduvada

The word medu is a Kannada word which means soft, and vada means fritter. So we have meduvada which means soft fritters. You can find it almost at every South Indian restaurant's menu, and it has also become a popular street food in different parts of the country.

Some of the common variations in its name are

Tamil- ulundu vadai
Malayalam - uzhunnu vada
Telugu - garelu

It is also popularly known as urad vada and medhu vadai.

You may call it by different names, but when it comes to taste, then the authentic meduvada recipe is going to fill your mouth with water and satiate your taste buds.

Key ingredients of meduvada recipe:

If you are planning to make meduvada, then you would need black lentils (urad dal). This dal is soaked overnight and is then wet ground. The authentic vada recipe has asafoetida and ginger garlic paste, along with salt added to it. But now people have transformed the meduvada recipe by adding veggies to it. The latter gives it a healthy twist. Although this dish is lip-smacking, at the same time, it also has a lot of calories to it. The vadas are deep-fried in oil and hence have a high cholesterol content. You can obviously switch to a healthier version by using cold-pressed oil or olive oil, which is lighter, but then again, deep-fried vadas need to be consumed with caution.

Nutritional value:

As mentioned above, the entire preparation is done from urad dal, so it does have a high protein and vitamin content. Consuming one meduvada will give you :

You can also make some variations in the ingredients, like instead of urad dal, people also use tuar daal, massor daal, chana daal which are lighter and easier to digest. Based on your taste and requirement, you can create different recipes of medu vada. But while consuming it, keep into account the calorie count.
