India has seen tremendous growth and currently, there are 1000+ universities and 42,000+ colleges offering higher education in India. Indian higher education is the third largest in the world and offers courses in science, commerce and arts disciplines. In terms of student enrollment, it is second only to China.

The growth in the education sector is due to the high demand for higher education. According to a report, undergraduate courses the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts make up 50% of all the enrollments. Professional courses like Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Technology make up 10.5% of all enrollments.

Postgraduate-level courses like Master of Sciences, Master of Arts and Master of Business Administration are the popular choices. In India, just 2.5% of the institutes run Ph.D. programs. You can find popular undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. Courses in Uttarakhand institutes.

There is a need for greater investment in postgraduate education in India. The private sector has not expanded to its capacity and the effort must be led by the Government. Private institutions find it difficult to run postgraduate programs except for management and engineering. There is a need to incentivise and make teaching and research more attractive.

As there is a high rate of enrollment in the undergraduate programs universities can limit the number of courses and focus on emerging areas and new programs. The undergraduate courses need to incorporate vocational skills to prepare the students for the job market.

The top 10 popular programs account for 78% of all the graduates. The science and technology programs have a higher pass percentage than the other disciplines. The technical courses have a strong linkage with the industry as students are hired from the campus. For other courses, partnerships can be designed by the employers in the region to respond to the local demand for skilled workers.

Transforming higher education

University Grant Commission (UGC) is the higher education regulator and monitors the quality of higher education in India. Its various functions are funding and granting autonomy which require assessing the quality of education.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is expected to bring in reforms in the education sector. The policy aims to transform India into a knowledge hub with educated skilled manpower of high standards. Higher education is essential for improving human well-being and developing the country. The aim of the institutes should be to develop good, creative and well-rounded individuals.
